Should You Use Dry Carpet Cleaning?

February 3rd, 2010 No comments

What is dry carpet cleaning? Should you use it? What good does it do and how is it different from wet (or steam) cleaning? Is it safe? These are all kinds of questions that people have about this interesting cleaning method. First of all, you should know that this method does not require the use of water. Instead, the carpet is cleaned with a dry cleaning mixture that is both absorbent, solvent, and detergent. It is a powder that you sprinkle on the carpet, and then the powder dissolves the dirt in the carpet. The detergent and solvent finish off the dirt, and can then be vacuumed up off of the carpet, bringing the dissolved dirt with it.

If you use dry carpet cleaning, you need to be sure to use the right chemicals for your carpet fibers. Not every chemical mixture will work with every carpet. If you use the wrong chemicals, it can damage your carpet by causing the fibers to become frayed or the colors to fade or even run. If you aren’t sure which chemical to use, ask at a home supply store, such as Home Depot, or carefully read the instructions on the bottle to make sure you’re getting the right thing for your needs.

You can, of course, use dry carpet cleaning on your carpet yourself, or you can hire a professional company to do it for you. One of the benefits of this method is that your carpet can be used again immediately after cleaning it. With steam cleaning, you have to wait until the carpet dries before you walk on it again. This could take a while. However, with the dry cleaning method, you should still keep kids and pets from playing on it for a little while after vacuuming up the powder, to give any residual chemicals time to dissipate.

In fact, many people are wary of the dry cleaning method because it is difficult to get up all of the chemical residue after vacuuming it. There will always be a little bit of residue left over, which children and pets could get on them from rolling around on the carpet. For sensitive kids and animals, this could cause itching or other unpleasant reactions. You won’t get this with steam cleaning.

Dry carpet cleaning is appropriate for people who are not concerned about chemicals, want a quick clean they can use right before a party or other get-together, and do not have children or pets. For other people, steam cleaning is still the best option, especially because it is a totally organic way to clean your carpets and will cause no negative side effects to anyone who might play on the carpet. You may have to wait until it dries before you use it again, but in the long run, it’s worth it.
