Are Carpet Shampoo Machines for the Home Any Good?

January 18th, 2010 No comments

You will eventually have to clean that carpet. no matter how much you may want to avoid it, the carpet is eventually going to become so dingy, smelly, and just ragged looking that you are going to have to do something about it if you don’t want to look like you live in a barn. After all, it is pretty embarrassing for you to have guests come over only to find a disgusting, flattened, and worn carpet awaiting them. Yet, no matter how rough of a shape your carpet may be in, you can still rescue it with a good cleaning. Sometimes, carpets look just like new after getting cleaned. So, what do you need to do a good job on cleaning your carpets at home? You need to either rent a steam cleaner or one of the new carpet shampoo machines.

The big difference between steam cleaners and carpet shampoo machines is that the shampooers utilize a mild detergent to get the carpet clean, while steam cleaners rely on steam alone. Both types of machines do an excellent job and can get your carpet about as clean as the other machine will do. With steam, you don’t need shampoo, because the heat of the steam moisture will kill any germs or microbes or even insects that may be hiding in the recesses of your carpet, while with shampoo machines, the water isn’t nearly as hot as that used in the steam cleaner, so the shampoo has to be relied upon to disinfect the carpet. Either method works equally well. It is really a matter of personal preference, budget, availability of the machines, and how comfortable you feel using a shampoo on your carpet that may very well have chemicals in it.

If you ask most professional carpet cleaners, they will tell you that the preferable option is steam cleaning, just because it is so much cleaner and simpler. You don’t get a sudsy shampoo mess with a steam cleaner, and the only material you need to do the cleaning process is water. Heat from the steam will usually kill things that the shampoo may not. It is just an easier, cheaper, and all around more efficient way to clean carpets, except for the extra energy it takes to heat the water.

With carpet shampoo machines, you will find that your carpet will take longer to dry than with a steam cleaner, and it may not get it quite as clean as a steam cleaner. Plus, renting a shampoo machine is more expensive, plus you have the added expense of the shampoo itself. Therefore, steam cleaners are really the preferable choice when it comes to cleaning your carpet.
